Artist Healthcare Initiative

Overview

The Artist Healthcare Initiative is a comprehensive program designed to address the diverse health needs of artists in our community.

By providing support for various medical, dental, and mental health services, we aim to ensure that artists can maintain their health and continue to enrich our world with their creativity.

Case Study

A 2016 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that visual artists had higher mortality rates from lung cancer, suicide, and other causes compared to the general population. The researchers attributed this to potential occupational exposures and the stresses of the artistic lifestyle.

  1. A 2013 study in the Scandinavian Journal of Public Health looked at mortality rates among Danish artists. It found that male visual artists had a 40% higher risk of death compared to the general male population, with higher rates of suicide, accidents, and certain diseases.

  2. Research from the United Kingdom's Office for National Statistics in the early 2000s suggested that musicians, artists, and entertainers had higher rates of suicide compared to other occupations. The stresses of the industry were cited as a likely contributor.

  3. A 2015 study published in Medical Care examined mortality rates among different occupations in the U.S. It found that "artists, designers, musicians, and entertainers" had a significantly higher risk of death from suicide compared to other professions.

  4. Research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has indicated elevated suicide rates among certain creative occupations in the U.S., such as musicians, composers, and painters.

  5. A 2012 report by the National Endowment for the Arts reviewed existing literature and found some evidence of poorer physical and mental health outcomes for U.S. artists compared to other workers, though the data was limited.

  6. Anecdotal reports and stories from the U.S. arts community have also highlighted issues like substance abuse, depression, and other health challenges that disproportionately impact artists.
